‘I have heard people speak of a woman who performs rituals in honour of fallen trees. She has been seen anointing the severed limbs of trunks with oils or scattering salt and snail shells on the ground beneath the stumps. Sometimes, I was told, she lays the body of the bole upon a bier and parades it solemnly through the streets. There have been sightings in Białowieża, Yorkshire and South Aceh.’
