If you think you see with just your eyes you’re mad
A blindfold clay sculpture workshop:
* wrap a selection of random small handheld objects in fabric (to be used later for blindfolds)
* ask students to draw the object by ‘feel’ - to sense the shape of the object just by touching it
* then unwrap the object and draw it again - looking closely at the object
* then recreate a version of the object in clay, blindfolded
This was a great exercise - using touch rather than sight to see the object and then to shape the clay without seeing the results helped the students to let go and not worry too much about the outcome - the process encouraged everyone to think 3-dimensionally and to explore the depth/weight/texture of an object rather than just the outline...
